Insurance isn't complicated because you're missing something. It's complicated because most people only look at it once a year.
Whether you're buying your first home, reviewing a renewal, or wondering why your premium increased, we've put together straightforward answers to the questions homeowners ask us every day.
Our goal isn't to sell you a policy. It's to help you understand the one you already have—and make better decisions when it's time to shop.
The articles in this learning center come directly from the conversations I have with homeowners every week. My goal isn't to impress you with technical terms. It's to explain insurance the same way I explain it to customers sitting across my desk every day—clearly, honestly, and without the jargon.

Why I Built This Learning Center
I was blown away by the number of customers who told me they had never had a conversation with their insurance agent. What's worse, many weren't even sure they had the right coverage because no one had ever taken the time to explain it.
Insurance is more than another monthly bill—it's an investment in protecting everything you've worked hard to build. That's why I created this Learning Center: to answer real questions in plain English and help homeowners make confident decisions before they ever need to file a claim.
I believe homeowners deserve:
Meet Kelley Whitehurst
Before entering the insurance industry, I was a homeowner who understood how devastating an uninsured loss could be—but I didn't truly understand what my policy covered.
For years, I worked blue-collar jobs where I knew protecting my home and family was important. Like many homeowners, I understood the consequences of not having insurance, but the policy itself felt like a collection of unfamiliar terms, percentages, deductibles, and exclusions that no one had ever taken the time to explain.
That changed when I entered the insurance business.
I quickly learned that homeowners insurance is far more detailed than most people realize. I also discovered that many customers had never had a meaningful conversation with their insurance agent. Some weren't sure what was protected. Others assumed they had coverage they didn't. Many simply renewed their policy year after year without ever receiving a clear explanation.
I understood that frustration because I had experienced it myself.
Before becoming an agent, I spent hours trying to get straightforward answers about my own insurance coverage. Simple questions often led to long hold times, confusing explanations, or conversations that never really answered what I wanted to know.
It became clear to me that understanding your insurance shouldn't be that difficult.
That's one of the reasons I opened Kelley Whitehurst Insurance Agency and built this Learning Center.
My goal isn't simply to write insurance policies. It's to help homeowners understand what they're buying before they ever need to file a claim.
I believe informed homeowners are better equipped to protect their families, their homes, and everything they've worked hard to build.
Today, I'm the owner of Kelley Whitehurst Insurance Agency and licensed in Texas for homeowners, auto, commercial, life, and health insurance.
I also personally handle my customer service calls because I believe the relationship doesn't end once a policy is issued. When questions arise, I want my customers to be able to speak directly with the person who understands their coverage and knows their concerns.
My graduate education in public administration and psychology has influenced how I communicate, but one of my most valuable lessons came from being on the other side of the desk. I remember what it felt like to have questions and struggle to get clear answers.
That's why I focus on explaining insurance in plain English instead of relying on industry jargon.
Whether you're reviewing your current policy or shopping for new coverage, I'm here to help you understand your insurance—not just sell it.
